The air is crisp, the pumpkins are ripe, and it’s the perfect time for hot cider and Halloween fun. But with the colder weather coming, autumn couldn’t possibly be the season for flowers, could it? You couldn’t be more wrong; autumnal flower arrangements are just as popular in the fall season, and Forest of Flowers is going to show you how to pick the best of them!

Contrary to popular belief, floral arrangements aren’t always just about bright, tropical colours; they contain kisses of deep burgundy, orange, red, forest green and yellows too. Add some extra fall-themed accents and you have something that is not only going to bring fall colours to your home but could even be the centrepiece of your Halloween or Thanksgiving festivities.

Don’t worry, the folks at Forest of Flowers are your flower arrangement specialists, prepared to help you bring a touch of autumn inside this season.

How to Choose the Best Autumnal Flowers for Your Home

When it comes to choosing the best autumnal flowers for your home, there are a lot of things you need to consider. For one, are you choosing an arrangement just for the season in general? Or are you looking for a fall holiday-specific look?

Lucky for you, there’s something for everyone when it comes to choosing vibrant fall flowers. From colours to unique blooms along with fall-themed accents, we got some things to consider!

Sunflowers

While the season of sunflowers starts in the summer and extends into September, sunflowers are often associated with autumn crops. When you think of sunflowers, you likely see images of corn stalks, wheat, scarecrows and farms – which makes them perfect for an arrangement meant to celebrate the harvest. Not to mention that as the weather gets colder, bringing in sunflowers could make your space feel a little warmer.

Traditionally, sunflowers are yellow, but there are also red and orange hues available, depending on where you source them from. These colours fit perfectly into the fall theme and can make for a great arrangement or even a centrepiece for a dinner gathering.

They can easily be complemented by other delicate blooms and accents, like feathers, foam or plastic fruits and veg, and fancy greenery.

Long Stem Roses

Versatile and beautiful, every occasion calls for long stem roses. Yellow, orange, red, and even a deep burgundy red can be stunning additions to any autumnal arrangements.

Whether you choose to have an arrangement made entirely of autumn-coloured roses or choose to pair them with daisies, gerberas, and spider mums – these stunning stable flowers are sure to impress your festive guests.

Dahlias

Dahlias have been cherished in gardens for their vibrant, exotic blooms that last throughout the season. Especially prized in late summer and autumn, they continue to flower until the first frost.

These spherical blooms look like something out of a fairytale fantasy and come in an array of colours, including golden shades of yellow and orange combined with reds that can be as dark as mulled wine. These flowers can bring that warm autumn spice to your flower arrangement along with some fancy greenery.

Hypericum Berries

Hypericum berries may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to adding blooms to an arrangement – because, well, they’re not blooms, technically.

Hypericum berries come from the plant Hypericum perforatum, commonly known as St. John's Wort. The berries are produced by certain species of the Hypericum flower and are a popular choice for flower arrangements due to their attractive, colourful appearance! They come in shades of red, pink, green, and orange, adding a pop of colour and texture to bouquets and arrangements alike.

Considering fall is the time of the harvest, a kiss of dark red or even pink berries can give your arrangement a touch of “crop”, if you will. Although, we don’t recommend that you eat them – they’re just there to add some pops of colour.

Aster

Asters are stunning little flowers that make excellent pops of colour in arrangements. While maybe not the most obvious autumn flower due to their hues of purple, white, and green, they make excellent colourful accents that act as a break from the warm tones of red, orange, and yellow.

These delicate flowers are the perfect kiss of colour to add into your arrangement if you want something to help brighten up your display.

Choosing Your Arrangement Decor

We’ve made a few mentions of extra touches of autumn decor you can add to your arrangement to really make it autumn themed. However, we’d like to go more in depth into some additional autumn floral decor to help add some spice to your seasonal festivities.

Cornucopia

Baskets, vases, and more – there are few vessels for presentation that fit fall better than a cornucopia. This traditional, cone-like basket is a must-have for the Thanksgiving season.

Traditionally, these baskets are filled with fruit or gourds to symbolize the harvest, but talented florists have adopted this wicker wonder and made it into an excellent vessel for a floral arrangement. A symbolism of harvest, wealth, and abundance, cornucopias are traced back to ancient Greece!

Decorate with red and orange long-stem roses, colourful daisies, asters, and some accents of honeycomb decorations and you have something that can steal the show right next to the turkey this Thanksgiving.

Fruits and Veggies

You don’t need to add literal fruits and veggies (although you can, we’ll explain), but instead florists can add plastic or foam fruits and veggies into your floral display to really put emphasis on the fall harvest and Thanksgiving season.

Apples, pears, pumpkins and other gourds are great additions to any harvest-themed floral arrangement! Or, if they happen to have them in stock, did you know flower arrangements can have CABBAGES in them?

Yes, cabbages, and they’re beautiful!

They tend to be smaller and colourful with long, thick stems and hardy leaves. Often called ornamental cabbages, these beautiful plants will stun and awe guests who would never have guessed this soil born vegetable to be amongst a bundle of blooms!

Flannel Bows

Ah, nothing screams sitting in a log cabin with the fireplace roaring as dewy autumn leaves fall from the sky quite like… flannel. Associated with the popular long-sleeve shirt or coat, flannel is a popular pattern that has bled into different forms of fabrics across the globe. Including BOWS!

Bows are essential for bouquets and arrangements alike. Whether they’re wrapped around the stems of 12 long stem roses or adorning a wicker basket filled with varied blooms.

How you choose to present those bows is up to you, whether it’s a Dior bow, double bow, tail down bow, fancy loop bow, whatever you prefer! Just ask your local florist what they can do and what they think will suit your autumn floral arrangement.

Leaves, Leaves, Leaves!

No one can talk about autumn without talking about colourful, falling leaves. Intrinsically tied into memories of jumping in leaf piles and spotting the start of the season through a change in hue, colourful leaves can take any flower arrangement and make them truly autumn-themed.

They don’t have to be natural leaves and can simply be decorative, so they last long, and you don’t have to worry about having them stored elsewhere. This also gives you the freedom to choose the size, length, and style of leaf – perhaps you’re a fan of the classic maple leaf, or perhaps white oak, or birch, and chestnut. Each has their own unique shape and appearance and comes in a variety of colours from yellow, to orange, to red, and brown.

Having leaves wisping out of your arrangement is a sure-fire way to celebrate the festive fall season.

Pumpkins

We mentioned pumpkins and gourds earlier, but they are truly a standalone decor item that can be a central piece to your floral arrangement. Whether you want to add in some small plastic pumpkins to your arrangement, or even have a pumpkin as your arrangement’s vessel, pumpkins are the quintessential autumn icon.

Imagine a spray of beautiful flowers coming out of a class pumpkin (or Jack o’ Lantern) vase! Now that’s something unique and fun that your guests are sure to never forget.

Or, if you prefer to keep your blooms solo, you could add pumpkin or gourd decorations around the centerpiece to add some additional accents. Your floral arrangement can take center stage, surrounded by a collection of autumn treasures; pumpkins, gourds, pinecones, leaves, you name it, you can make it!

Perhaps you want to partake in a little DIY pumpkin craft? You could even make your own pumpkin bouquet out of an assortment of colourful mini pumpkins as a fun gift to bring to whoever is hosting the fall holiday feast this year.

Attach the tiny pumpkins to sticks with craft glue and arrange them based on size and shape. Cover the “stems” in a burlap wrapping and tie it off with a fancy flannel bow. You can add additional accents such as strands of wheat or leaves for extra “oomf.” Talk about the perfect gift to celebrate fall!
